Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik—called the “Pearl of the Adriatic”— is perched on a craggy outcrop, where the Adriatic Sea thunders beyond the city’s massive fortress walls. In its 15th- and 16th-century heyday it was a Renaissance merchant state, rivaling Venice for control of the seas.
